REPORTS TO R&D Manager in Hamburg with a functional line to the R&D Director | ROLE FOCUS Mechanical systems for industrial surface-treatment equipment |
The opportunity The Mechanical Design Supervisor leads the mechanical design team responsible for industrial surface-treatment equipment. You will set technical direction, review design quality, develop team capability, and guide products from concept through verification and release to manufacturing. |
What you will do • Lead the mechanical design team by setting priorities, assigning work, coaching designers, and conducting regular performance and development discussions. • Own the mechanical design lifecycle from concept development and 3D modeling through detailed drawings, prototyping, verification, and release to manufacturing. • Translate product roadmaps and customer requirements into design plans, resource needs, milestones, and technical deliverables. • Review and approve 3D models, production drawings, bills of materials, calculations, and test reports for technical accuracy, reliability, manufacturability, and cost. • Apply design for manufacturing and design for assembly principles early enough to influence materials, processes, tolerances, serviceability, and product cost. • Coordinate with electrical engineering, automation, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, sales, and service teams to integrate complete product solutions and resolve interface issues. • Control engineering changes and engineering change orders, assessing their effects on performance, certification, manufacturing, supply, schedule, and cost. • Ensure designs and records meet applicable company requirements, customer specifications, and relevant standards and conformity obligations, including ISO, ASME, CE, and UL requirements where applicable. • Lead the technical investigation of complex design, manufacturing, field-performance, and customer issues, and ensure corrective actions are implemented and verified. • Improve design methods, templates, libraries, analysis practices, and engineering tools based on measurable team and product needs. |
What you bring • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design, or a related technical field. A doctorate is an advantage. • At least five years of mechanical design experience in industrial equipment, including responsibility for complex assemblies and design release. • Demonstrated experience leading, supervising, or technically mentoring mechanical designers and engineers. • Advanced capability in a major 3D CAD platform, such as SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, or Autodesk tools, and strong command of production drawings and geometric tolerancing. • Experience with finite element analysis tools, such as ANSYS or Abaqus, and the ability to judge when analysis or physical testing is required. • Deep knowledge of materials, tolerances, mechanical design principles, and manufacturing processes including machining, sheet metal, casting, welding, and molding as relevant to the product. • Strong working knowledge of design for manufacturing, design for assembly, risk-based design review, and product verification. • Familiarity with product lifecycle management systems, such as Siemens Teamcenter or PTC Windchill, is an advantage. • Working knowledge of relevant design and quality standards, including ISO 9001, ASME Y14.5 or ISO GPS practices, and CE conformity requirements. • Strong project planning, decision-making, and communication skills, with the ability to manage several priorities and resolve technical disagreement constructively. |
